Douglas mysteriously collided with a trailer on a training ride on 5th January 2013, apparently skidding across the centreline into a trailer being towed in the opposite direction. This was most uncharacteristic of a man who was such a skilled cyclist and known for promoting safe cycling.

He was a stalwart of Kiwi Randonneurs and an active organiser and two times Paris-Brest-Paris ancien.

Douglas was actively involved in Kiwi Randonneurs since 2007 when he first completed PBP. He was the longest serving member and a great advocate of randonneuring in New Zealand. Riding with Doug we all remember our friend who mentored, encouraged and ensured the safety & enjoyment of us all.

Douglas also contributed greatly to cycling in Wellington, organising the Featherston Fun Ride and as a long serving committee member of the Wellington Masters Cycling Club.

Our condolences to Kay and family.

We have lost a wonderful friend and endurance riding legend.
